The BC Men’s Basketball team will travel to Miami in a Saturday afternoon matchup. This is the second meeting between the two teams this season, with the Hurricanes coming out victorious 74-68 in the previous matchup.
Miami stands at an impressive 11-4 in the ACC, and rank just outside the Top 25 in the AP Men’s Basketball Rankings.
They look to finish their season strong with the ACC and NCAA Tournaments on the horizon. According to a recent Yahoo Sports report, the Hurricanes project as an 8 or 9 seed in the March Madness Tournament.
Meanwhile, it’s a completely different story for Boston College. The Eagles are coming off a 68-67 home win versus Wake Forest and earned their third win of the season versus ACC opponents. For BC, getting as many wins as possible is crucial for earning a spot in the ACC Tournament. The team showed fight in their recent win, something to keep an eye on in this matchup versus an elite opponent.
The Hurricanes are led by Malik Reneau, a 6’9’ senior who transferred from Indiana. Reneau will be the best player on the court in this contest. He is a high energy forward who showcases exceptional post skills with a smooth touch around the rim. Reneau is quick in the open court and uses his athleticism to his advantage. He also has improved as a shooter, upping his three-point percentage to 35.6% compared to last year’s 12.5%. Along with Reneau is guard Tre Donaldson and forward Shelton Henderson, the former averaging 16.6 points and the latter at 14.3 points per game. As a whole, the Hurricanes shoot the ball very efficiently at 50.5%, which ranks 1st in the ACC. They are extremely active on defense and attack ball handlers well as they average close to eight steals a night.
For the Eagles to up their chances in winning this game, it comes down to two areas: defense and fouls. It’s without question the Eagles have their struggles on offense, but for the most part they’ve shown that defense is the team’s bread and butter. BC is ranked 3rd in the ACC in blocks per game (4.8), so Jayden Hastings and Aidan Shaw will be needed tremendously in this one. As for fouls, one of the areas in which Miami struggles is from behind the charity stripe (67.8% on the season). To slow the game down and play at their pace, it’s definitely in the Eagles best interest to be more physical, even if it means making Miami earn their points from the FT line.
It will be tough to pull out a win, but BC has shown in spurts this year that they can fight versus superior teams. Miami is destined for March Madness, and it just won’t bode well for BC if the Eagles lose their focus. Let’s hope the momentum from the Wake Forest win carries over to this one, but don’t count on it.
Prediction: Miami Hurricanes 79, Boston College Eagles 63
