In 2023, the Spurs drafted Victor Wembanyama, the most anticipated star since LeBron James. They needed someone who could control steer the ship, bring in leadership, and pair with a generational talent.
On February 3rd, the San Antonio Spurs made a big trade — something they are not known for. But this move was special. They wanted De’Aaron Fox.
In a three team trade, the Spurs sent Zach Collins, Sidy Cissoko, and a combination of 1st and 2nd round picks to Sacramento. They also sent Tre Jones to Chicago and returned a 1st round pick to the Bulls.
The Bulls sent Zach Levine to Sacramento.
And the Kings sent Kevin Huerter to Chicago while De’Aaron Fox and Jordan McLaughlin made their way to San Antonio.
Fox played in seventeen games before it came to light that he’d been playing with a torn tendon in his left pinky. Once Wemby went out for the remainder of the season with deep vein thrombosis, Fox had the necessary surgery.
This year the team is reaping the benefits of Fox’s basketball IQ.
And for Fox, the move has been ideal. His wife, Recee, is from San Antonio and supported the move. Fox hasn’t stopped smiling, and his involvement both on and off court show just how comfortable he is with the Spurs and the Alamo City.
Today, Fox turns 29. He’s playing some of the best basketball of his career. He just was acknowledged for his play during the NBA Emirates Cup being named to the All-Tournament Team. His fit with the team is ideal and the year has started much stronger than most expected.
Fox is in his prime and he’s got many players at his fingertips to help shape championship runs in the years to come.
Happy birthday, De’Aaron.
