Nebraska is on the cusp of a pivotal season that could very well determine how Matt Rhule’s tenure in Lincoln ultimately develops. There are plenty of questions surrounding the Huskers heading into 2026, but many of the issues that have plagued Rhule’s team have centered around one area: the trenches.
Inconsistency along both the offensive and defensive lines has been a major hurdle for Nebraska. If the Huskers can take a significant step forward in both departments this season, an eight-win campaign
is certainly not out of the question.
But there is a bigger question lurking behind the 2026 season.
Has Nebraska finally figured out how to recruit the lines?
The Big Ten has long been regarded as the conference that most closely resembles the NFL when it comes to physicality. Every Saturday brings a battle in the trenches, and programs that want to compete at the top of the conference need to have the athletes to win those battles.
That makes recruiting the offensive and defensive lines absolutely critical.
The problem is that finding finished products in the transfer portal is becoming prohibitively expensive. If you want a proven starting offensive tackle or disruptive defensive lineman, you are going to pay a premium.
The more sustainable answer is to recruit and develop those players yourself.
So, is Nebraska finally building that pipeline?
Numbers don’t lie
One way to get a better idea of where Nebraska stands is to compare the Huskers with some of the leading recruiting programs in the Big Ten for the 2027 class.
There are three metrics worth examining: volume of recruits, blue-chip talent and physical measurables.
Starting with volume, Nebraska has nine offensive and defensive linemen committed in the 2027 recruiting class. That puts the Huskers level with Oregon and only two behind Ohio State.
That is significant.
Nebraska desperately needed to increase the number of young linemen in the pipeline after signing just four trench players in the 2026 class. Offensive and defensive linemen don’t generally walk onto campus and immediately become dominant college players. They need time to add strength, learn technique and adjust to the physical demands of major college football.
That makes recruiting volume particularly important.
The more quality bodies you bring into the building, the greater the chances of finding players who develop into legitimate starters.
However, there is a rather large caveat.
The blue-chip gap
Nebraska’s biggest problem is not the number of linemen it is recruiting. It is the quality at the very top of the group.
Of Nebraska’s nine 2027 trench commitments, only two are considered blue-chip recruits. That’s approximately 22%.
Compare that with the teams Nebraska is trying to catch.
Ohio State has blue-chip recruits accounting for approximately 81% of its offensive and defensive line commitments. Oregon sits at around 77%, while USC is at approximately 75%.
That is an enormous gulf.
And ultimately, this is where the difference between recruiting well and recruiting like a Big Ten powerhouse becomes apparent.
Nebraska is bringing in bodies.
Ohio State, Oregon and USC are bringing in elite bodies.
That’s an important distinction.
Where the numbers look better
There is, however, reason for Nebraska fans to be optimistic.
If the Huskers aren’t yet matching the nation’s best programs in blue-chip talent, the physical profile of the players they are recruiting is encouraging.
Nebraska’s offensive-line recruits compare favorably with the size and weight of those coming into programs such as Ohio State and Oregon.
That matters.
High-school offensive linemen are not finished products. Their bodies are going to change dramatically once they enter a college strength program. A 17- or 18-year-old offensive tackle can look very different after two or three years in a college weight room.
What you want to see initially is a good baseline.
Nebraska appears to be getting that.
The defensive line profile is slightly different. The Huskers are recruiting defensive linemen who are, on average, shorter and heavier than some of their conference rivals.
That could be viewed as a deliberate response to a problem Nebraska has had in recent years.
The Huskers have often relied on undersized interior defensive linemen, particularly when compared with the monsters being rolled out by programs at the top of the Big Ten.
Recruiting bigger, heavier bodies gives Nebraska a better foundation to work with.
The athlete still needs to develop, but the raw material is there.
And that is important.
Enter Geep Wade
Perhaps the most encouraging part of Nebraska’s offensive-line recruiting revolution is the arrival of Geep Wade.
Wade arrived in Lincoln from Georgia Tech with plenty of fanfare, and he has already shown why Nebraska was so keen to bring him aboard.
He is a relentless recruiter, but the real excitement comes from what he appears capable of doing once those players arrive in Lincoln.
Wade wants his offensive linemen to be athletic.
That fits Nebraska’s current personnel and the type of players the Huskers are bringing into the program. The modern offensive lineman cannot simply be a giant body who moves people in a straight line.
He needs to move.
He needs to get into space.
He needs to be able to operate in the running game and protect the quarterback against increasingly athletic defensive fronts.
Wade appears to understand that.
If he can take the size and athleticism of the players Nebraska is recruiting and turn them into the type of offensive linemen he envisions, the Huskers could eventually have a formidable group.
And that is where recruiting and development have to come together.
Recruiting the right body is only step one.
The defensive line remains a concern
While the offensive line is beginning to look like a genuine strength of the 2027 recruiting class, the defensive side of the ball is not quite there yet.
This is where Nebraska still has some work to do.
The Huskers are recruiting bigger defensive linemen, which is encouraging, but they aren’t currently landing enough of the blue-chip prospects required to compete with the very best programs.
That should concern Husker fans.
Ohio State and Oregon aren’t simply accumulating large defensive linemen. They are bringing in highly ranked athletes who have the potential to become difference-makers.
Nebraska needs to close that gap.
The contrast between the two sides of the ball is also becoming more pronounced.
Geep Wade looks to have established himself as a major recruiting asset on the offensive line. The defensive line needs to find a similar level of recruiting success.
Corey Brown has an important job on his hands.
If Nebraska is going to build a Big Ten-caliber defensive front, the Huskers need to start winning more of those battles for elite defensive linemen.
Final thoughts
So, has Nebraska finally started recruiting the trenches like a Big Ten powerhouse?
The answer is: they’re getting there, but they’re not there yet.
The volume is encouraging.
Nine trench recruits in the 2027 class puts Nebraska right alongside Oregon and within striking distance of Ohio State. The physical profile of those players is also encouraging, with Nebraska recruiting offensive linemen who stack up well against the conference’s leading programs.
But the blue-chip numbers tell a different story.
Two of nine is simply not good enough when Ohio State is at 81%, Oregon is at 77% and USC is at 75%.
Nebraska needs more elite players.
The Huskers need to start landing recruits like Albert Simien and turning those recruiting battles into wins. And while the offensive line appears to be heading in the right direction under Geep Wade, the defensive line still needs significant improvement.
The encouraging part is that Nebraska appears to have recognized the problem.
The Huskers are recruiting bigger.
They are recruiting more linemen.
They are building a pipeline.
Now comes the difficult part: turning those recruits into Big Ten-caliber players.
Because ultimately, recruiting rankings don’t win games.
Big, athletic, well-developed offensive and defensive linemen do.
And if Nebraska can finally get that part right, the conversation around the program could look very different in the next few years.
