If it isn’t already abundantly clear, Juventus want to bring Federico Chiesa back to Turin this month after he’s spent the past year and a half mostly sitting on the Liverpool bench. The catch, as is usually
the case with Juve when trying to make in-season moves during the winter transfer window, is to try and figure out how it will work with the finances more than anything.
Chiesa himself might be willing to help in some sort of way.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Chiesa is reportedly willing to take a pay cut in order to try and push through a January move back to Juventus. Considering that he makes a reported €6 million net a season at Liverpool, that is something that would be quite an ask for Juve to add to the books — even if it’s for an initial six-month loan deal for the remainder of the 2025-26 season. So while we hear about Juventus and Liverpool potentially haggling over if the potential deal will be with a formula of option or obligation to buy, the fact that Chiesa is reportedly willing to get back to Juventus on a lower salary is proof that he does want to make a move happen this month.
Or, at the very least, do something to show that his future lies somewhere other than Merseyside.
On top of the €6 million annual salary, Chiesa’s contract with Liverpool runs through 2028. Liverpool have reportedly asked for a transfer fee in the neighborhood of €15 million if Chiesa is to leave the club this month.
So while we haven’t heard of any subsequent and/or notable bid from Juventus to actually kick negotiations with Liverpool into gear, the slow trickle of ways that they can potentially make something happen is not nothing. With the month of January now halfway done with, negotiations will certainly have to reach some sort of conclusion — either good or bad — in relatively short order if Juventus want to bring him back over the next two weeks.
But, if this piece of information is to be believed, then it’s a good sign that Juve may have a little more financial flexibility to work with. (Even though there’s still not very much of that considering Financial Fair Play implications and the ramifications of all that.)
Now we just wait for some sort of bid to be made. It seems like Juventus are putting a lot of their concentration this month into trying to make a Chiesa comeback happen. So if that’s the case, they need to try and close a deal as soon as they can to try and get him to shake off some rust from barely playing at Liverpool yet again this season.
