SAN FRANCISCO — Wednesday notes:
- NO FUN BY THE BAY: In 2013-17, the Cubs won the first game of five straight series at San Francisco. Last night’s opening loss was their sixth in their last seven visits. The only win was two years ago. After losing the opener, they won the second game in 2018 and 2022, and lost it in 2019, 2021 and last year. (Courtesy BCB’s JohnW53)
- SCORELESS STREAK: Drew Pomeranz has not allowed a run over his last 12 appearances covering 10.2 innings, dating to July 25. He’s faced 42 batters and allowed 10 baserunners (seven hits, three walks) and struck out seven over that span.
- PCA UPDATE: Despite his recent slump, Pete Crow-Armstrong still leads the National League in bWAR (6.5) and doubles (34).
- THIS DAY IN CUBS HISTORY: Brant Brown’s three-run homer keyed a five-run seventh inning as the Cubs overcame a 9-3 deficit and defeated the Rockies 11-10 in 10 innings. The winning hit was an RBI single by Mickey Morandini. It happened 27 years ago today, Thursday, Aug. 27, 1998.
Cubs lineup:
Giants lineup:
Colin Rea, RHP vs. Carson Whisenhunt, LHP

Colin Rea’s last three starts have produced very good results: 2.16 ERA, 1.080 WHIP, no home runs in 16.2 innings. The only glitch: Too many walks (nine).
Rea allowed the Giants five runs (four earned) in five innings May 6 at Wrigley Field. He’ll need to be better tonight. It should be noted that Rea has been slightly better on the road (3.81 ERA in 11 games, eight starts) than at Wrigley (4.06 ERA in 15 games, 14 starts) this year and also a bit better in night games (3.64 ERA in 10 games, seven starts) than day games (4.15 ERA in 16 games, 15 starts).
Carson Whisenhunt was the Giants’ second-round pick in 2022 out of East Carolina. He was a Top 100 MLB prospect in 2024 and played in the Futures Game in both 2023 and 2024.
He made his MLB debut July 28 and has made four starts. He has yet to complete six innings in any of them, and in his last two didn’t make it out of the fourth. He’s never faced the Cubs or anyone on their active roster. Per his pitch selection chart below, he throws a lot of offspeed stuff. Let’s hope Cubs hitters clobber that pitch selection — 0ther teams have, as he’s allowed five home runs in 18.1 MLB innings.
