Seattle Seahawks safety Rodney Thomas II has been given a promotion.
NFL insider Aaron Wilson reports that the former Indianapolis Colts starter has been signed directly to the 53-man roster, having spent the previous two weeks as a practice squad elevation. Thomas only had one more practice squad elevation available for the season.
Thomas has filled in for the injured Ty Okada, who pulled his hamstring in the lead-up to Week 1 of the regular season. The former Yale star played a major role in Seattle’s
13-10 win over the New England Patriots, tipping a Drake Maye deep ball intended for Romeo Doubs into the hands of Nehemiah Pritchett, whose interception set up Jaxon Smith-Njigba’s game-tying touchdown.
While Wilson did not report a corresponding roster move to clear room for Thomas, it’s reasonable to think that Okada ends up on short-term injured reserve to heal his hamstring. Another possibility A.J. Finley is waived with the hopes of getting him back on the practice squad. Finley was signed from the practice squad to the active roster before Week 1 and played no snaps versus the New England Patriots and just four special teams snaps against the Arizona Cardinals.
We’ll have our answer before the Seahawks practice on Wednesday afternoon.
