Bayern Munich played with fire last season by having the likes of Leroy Sané, Joshua Kimmich and Alphonso Davies enter the final 12 months of their contract without a renewal or a sale. Kimmich and Davies still
ended up renewing, but the same worries are creeping up again as Dayot Upamecano now has also entered the last 12 months of his contract, which expires in 2026. Having established himself as the main center back on the roster, Upamecano has plenty of leverage to improve on what is still his first contract at Bayern. According to Bild reporter Tobi Altschäffl, as captured by @iMiaSanMia, Upamecano was handed a contract with a significant salary when first signing as a 22-year-old and is now looking to improve on it:
Dayot Upamecano currently earns up to €16m gross per year with all possible bonuses. Should he sign a new contract, €16m would become his base salary, plus other performance based add-ons. The sticking point remains the signing fee. Within the club, it is said that Upamecano has reached his current world-class level thanks to the club’s environment and support in difficult times. The Frenchman is happy at Bayern, but with Moussa Sissoko, he has an experienced agent, who is a tough negotiator and knows the market well. As things stand, Bayern’s supervisory board has not been presented with concrete figures. Bayern keep working on Upamecano’s extension, but are exploring alternatives at the same time. Marc Guéhi and Nico Schlotterbeck are the most prominent candidates. Everything depends on Upamecano’s decision, but also on the future of Kim Min-jae.
According to the report, the wage is not even the sticking point. It remains the signing bonus. Renewing the Frenchman would be expensive, but so would be losing him.
