Through two matchdays, Vincent Kompany has led a hungry Bayern Munich team to the top of the Bundesliga table with wins over RB
Leipzig and Augsburg. Following a busy international window for many of Bayern’s players, Bayern will need to quickly re-focus to defeat a struggling Hamburg squad. Bayern will also need to avoid looking ahead to a marquee midweek matchup with Chelsea to start the Champions League.
Back in the 1980s, Bayern and Hamburg ruled the Bundesliga. In the last 10 meetings, Bayern has won nine times by scoring 38 goals and only allowing three goals in return. Hamburg will have to look all the way back to 2009 to the last time they defeated the Rekordmeister. The last four meetings have been particularly embarrassing.
Hamburg has spent the last seven seasons barely missing out on promotion from the second division. Hamburg finished in the top four every season before finally finishing second in 2024/25.
Here is the predicted lineup, courtesy of BFW:

Vincent Kompany will want to put this game away in the first half. Nicolas Jackson, Lennart Karl, and Wisdom Mike should earn some quality minutes in the second half. Manuel Neuer was able to rest last week but he will need to be fresh for the Chelsea match on Wednesday, although Jonas Urbig won’t have much to do against Hamburg.
Konrad Laimer played 90 minutes in both of Austria’s wins over the international break, making Sacha Boey a better option. Leon Goretzka only played 25 minutes in Germany’s win over Northern Ireland and should be able to play 45-60 minutes before being placed by Aleksandar Pavlović. Kim Min-jae will be exhausted from two full matches against the United States and Mexico, otherwise this match would have been a perfect fit.
From an injury perspective, Bayern is still without the services of Jamal Musiala, Alphonso Davies, and Hiroki Itō. Tom Bischof is probably a healthy scratch as he recovers from his appendectomy.
Hamburg operates with a 3-4-3 formation that squeezes space in the defensive third. Against Borussia Mönchengladbach and St. Pauli, Hamburg failed to find the club’s first Bundesliga goal since 2018. Danish attacker Yussuf Poulsen joined Hamburg in July and has already been named the team’s captain, however he did not start in either game so far.
Bayern Munich is back in Bundesliga action after an international break and just before the Champions League kicks off.
