After the Belmont game, a reporter asked Jon Scheyer if JoJo Boumtje Boumtje was a better shooter than he was. The competitor in coach Scheyer woke up, he smirked, and said no.
Fair enough: Scheyer was a gifted offensive player who could really shoot.
But someone should asked him the logical follow-up question: is Boumtje Boumtje better at other stuff than was Scheyer?
Because it only took one game to see that the hype was legit: Boumtje Boumtje is an exceptional talent.
As this video shows, he’s obviously
a good shooter with solid mechanics. But even in the first 22 minutes of his Duke career, you got the basic idea of what he offers.
Boumtje Boumtje shot 7-11/2-5 from the floor and also 3-5 from the line. He had 7 rebounds (2 offensive) and had a block.
All of this should be qualified by one thing: although Belmont has some decent size, Evan Bradds could not match Duke’s talent.
That said, as you’ll see in this video, Boumtje Boumtje did not dominate accidentally. His shot is pretty pure, his footwork is advanced, and he’s big enough to bang back when guys start to beat on him.
That will come in handy soon when Duke faces Duke in its next exhibition, when the Blue Devils face Tennessee.
Rick Barnes has faced criticism for decades for his, uh, very physical defense, and he has a number of big, experienced players to throw at Boumtje Boumtje. We’ll know a lot more about him by how he deals with that.
