Fresh off of opening-night losses, Maryland women’s volleyball and Arkansas stepped onto Vanderbilt’s Memorial gym looking for a quick turnaround on the second day of the SEC/Big Ten Challenge. In a relentless, back-and-forth battle, the Terps prevailed with a 3-1 win.
Both teams treated Wednesday’s match as a fresh opportunity to prove themselves. From the opening serve, it was a neck-and-neck battle. That momentum shaped not just the first set but the entirety of the match.
Neither team could create
any separation early in what turned into a back-and-forth battle. In the opening set, the Razorbacks edged out Maryland, 26-24, capitalizing on a late set point after trading blows through the extra points.
While Maryland took an early five-point lead in the set, Arkansas clawed back behind a pair of kills from opposite hitter Romani Thurman. That sequence was part of the Razorbacks’ four-point run, which allowed them to take a one-point lead, 23-22.
But it was Layla Smith’s solo block and an error from Sydney Bryant that allowed Arkansas to pull away and win the first set.
The Terps responded with a similar resilience in the second set. In an extended 30-28 marathon, Maryland fended off multiple set points and matched Arkansas point-for-point before finally taking the set.
Riding that momentum, Maryland brought the energy and produced an early lead in the third set. The Terps managed to lose the point buffer that was initially set. Arkansas regained their drive momentarily by indulging in long rallies, keeping the set score tied for longer.
As the set progressed, Maryland’s freshman Ava Brown begins to attract the spotlight with her constituency and skills that explain her high kill count. Ranked No. 7 in hitting percentage with a .516, Brown let the Terps take the third set with a sharp spike at the net. Setter Sara Toth repeatedly looked to the freshman on out-of-system plays, and Brown delivered by intentionally tooling the Arkansas block.
Despite being up 2-1 in sets, Maryland refused to relax during the fourth set. While both teams traded points early, the Terps eventually dominated their way throughout, building a comfortable cushion and eliminating the possibility of a potential five-set comeback from Arkansas and securing their first win of the SEC/Big Ten tournament.
With the 3-1 victory over Arkansas, Maryland moves to the 1-1 on the season and finishes the Big Ten challenge on a high note. The Terps showed remarkable growth from night one to night two, particularly in their ability to execute under pressure during tight, late-set scenarios. Maryland will look to keep that momentum rolling as they return home to host their next matchup at the XFINITY Center Pavillion back home.

1. Freshman potential. With six freshmen, this is a formative season for Maryland. The team has shown an ability to grow, even just game to game.
2. High-pressure resilience. After dropping a tight, 26-24, opening frame, Maryland could have let the momentum slip away. Instead, the Terps showed remarkable grit in the second set, fending off multiple set points in an incredible 30-28 victory.
3. Front-row defense. While the offense found its rhythm a little further into the game, Maryland’s net defense anchored the victory. The Terps out-blocked Arkansas 11-7 overall, using crucial touches and blocking in Sets 3 and 4 to keep the Razorbacks’ primary hitters at bay.
