Good morning, baseball fans!
Earlier this week, it was announced that ESPN’s Joe Buck had received the Hall of Fame’s Ford C. Frick Award, to the consternation of San Francisco Giants fans for multiple
reasons.
The most unreasonable being that some Giants fans just kind of hate Joe Buck. A lot of it seems to be due to his perceived biases during his coverage of the team during their championship runs in the 2010s. But I don’t think that’s particularly fair. Buck is an excellent broadcaster, and as I’ve gone back to re-watch the biggest moments of those playoffs, I appreciate even more the way he sets the scene and then lets the moment unfold for the viewers to soak in.
So I can’t say that I have any ill will towards Buck, or the fact that he received this well-earned award.
However, my gripe with the Hall of Fame continues because Giants broadcasting legend Duane Kuiper was also a finalist for this year’s award, as he has been multiple times. And he was once again passed over.
Ideally, when (not if) Duane Kuiper and Mike Krukow enter the Hall of Fame, I’d like to see them go in together. Of course they’re both brilliant even separately, but together they are iconic and (along with Jon Miller and Dave Flemming) have repeatedly been voted by fans across the league as the best broadcasting team in baseball.
So it’s just kind of a bummer to watch them repeatedly not get their flowers. I can only hope that gets rectified soon, while they’re both still in the booth.
How are you all feeling about this news?
