Anthony Gordon’s England prospects and his weekend availability were both addressed in Craig Hope’s latest Daily Mail column, offering a clear picture of where the Newcastle United winger stands heading into a crucial stretch for club and country.
Hope reported that Gordon is currently in “a three-way battle with Marcus Rashford and Eberechi Eze” for England’s starting left-wing role under Thomas Tuchel.
Added Hope: “If you’d asked me two weeks ago, I would have said Gordon was in pole,” saying that
Tuchel “loves how he makes England play on the front foot.”
However, Hope noted that both Rashford and Eze “did well against Serbia and Albania,” meaning the final decision will depend heavily on club form and the March international window.
On Gordon’s immediate fitness, Hope stated that “my information earlier in the international break was that Gordon should be fit for the game” against Manchester City, calling it “a huge boost for Newcastle.” He also acknowledged Eddie Howe’s public assessment that availability was “50-50,” but reaffirmed his own understanding that Gordon is tracking toward involvement.
Hope wrote that this type of opponent is “the type of fixture against top opposition when Gordon produces his best,” stressing that the challenge for both the player and the team is finding that level consistently. He further addressed outside criticism regarding recent performances, stating that “I do believe Newcastle have the best chance of being the team they want to be with him in it.”
