Newcastle United have secured the future of veteran defender Fabian Schar just before his contract ended on July 1.
The Mapies announced on Tuesday that the Swiss international has signed a new one-year contract through the end of the 2026-27 season, keeping him in tow under manager Eddie Howe for a ninth campaign.
Schar joined Newcastle from Spain’s Deportivo La Coruna in 2018 and is now the second-longest-serving player in the current squad. He has made 251 appearances for the club and scored 22
goals, while helping Newcastle qualify twice for the Champions League and lift the Carabao Cup.
“I’m really pleased to be staying at the club,” Schar said. “I feel like I’ve achieved a lot in my eight years here but I believe there is still much more to come. I’m proud to call Newcastle home. Everybody knows how happy I am, both in this city and with this club, so I’m very glad to be continuing that for another year.”
Schar’s season wasn’t anything remarkable, mind you, as he was forced to end it early because of an injury and didn’t really feature that much during the final third of it. That created some questions about whether or not NUFC would be willing to re-sign him, but the club ultimately did, and the player said his focus is now on returning to full fitness ahead of the new campaign.
Howe, meanwhile, has welcomed the agreement and highlighted the defender’s importance both on and off the pitch.
“Fabian has been outstanding since I arrived at the football club so I’m really pleased to see that he’ll be staying with us,” Howe said. “He’s a really highly valued member of our squad, not only for his ability on the pitch but also for the leadership and experience he brings to the group.”
The extension provides Howe with at least some experienced defensive cover as Newcastle expects to undergo a full rebuild during the summer transfer window following an atrocious 12th-place Premier League finish.
