While the nation is solidly focused on the USA vs. Belgium this evening, there is another soccer game happening today. Portugal will take on Spain for a chance to see who the best team in the Iberian peninsula excluding Gibraltar is. The match will feature Portugal trying to open things up and get the last bit of greatness out of Cristiano Ronaldo in what may be his final World Cup game against a Spain side that is looking a lot like the team that won the whole thing in 2010. This team has been effective
at controlling the game in possession, trying to pass in order to pull opponents out of space… again… and again… and again… pass and pull, pass and pull, pass and pull… until a chance develops out of effectiveness or boredom.
In any case, it’s gotten them this far and the game against Portugal puts two of the best teams in the tournament against each other. It should be a fascinating game with the winner set to take on the United States if they beat Belgium.
