The head of referees for the DFB, Knut Kircher spoke about VAR in the upcoming Bundesliga season in an interview with Frankfurter Rundschau. The main goal of the season is strengthen the decision-making authority of referees on the pitch and to have VAR interfere less often. In order for VAR to intervene, the refereeing error must “immediately apparent in the very first camera angle,” according to Kircher.
“There will be situations where you can say: ‘Perhaps a different decision could have been made.
But that’s an inherent part of football.’ In terms of decision-making and game-management, we are moving somewhat back towards the ‘football of yesterday.’ The aim is to strengthen the referee’s authority and personality as the person in charge of the game on the pitch,” said Kircher (as recorded by @iMiaSanMia). “At the same time, however, the goal remains to have ‘as much consistency in decision-making as possible.”
This will something to watch over the upcoming season as we are just coming off of a World Cup where new rules were implemented to allow more intervention from VAR. However, the Bundesliga has not adopted all the new VAR rules from this Summer’s tournament. VAR will be able to review the validity of a second yellow card — though it cannot recommend a review for a second yellow if one was not given. The Bundesliga has not adopted the rules to allow VAR to reverse the decision to give a corner kick, nor will the covering of a players mouth in confrontation be an automatic red.
