Week 1 is finally here. The long offseason is done and there are already two games in the books. Our Minnesota Vikings will have the pleasure of hosting the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. It’s a late afternoon game, so there will be a lot of eyes. Jim Nanace and new partner JJ Watt will be calling the game for CBS that will be on local TV for 90% of the US market. Some will be happy Tony Romo won’t be on the broadcast after his offseason issues. Getting back to the actual game, these two teams obviously
have a long history.
Series Record: 61-67-3 (1-1 Playoffs)
Home Record: 31-33
Streak: W1
Largest Victory: 35 Points (42-7, 1986)
Largest Defeat: 38 Points (45-7, 2011)
- The Vikings are 11-8-1 over the last 10 years against the Packers.
- Since 2000, the teams are an even 13-13 in games hosted by the Vikings.
- The last time the Vikings hosted the Packers for a season opener, Justin Jefferson went for 184 yards and 2 TDs. (Week 1, 2022)
- Jefferson has averaged 105 yards and has 4 TDs in 6 games at home against the Packers.
This will be a fascinating game for both sides. The Vikings QB carosel has stopped on Kyler Murray’s name and the Packers will be a good team for him to get his feet wet with the team. The Packers defense will be without it’s best player in Micah Parsons. Their offense will also be without Josh Jacobs, who is on the Commission’s Exempt List. Jordan Love hasn’t had the best games against Brian Flores’ defenses. Love is 2-3 against the Vikings averaging 258 YPG with 9 TDs and 4 INTs. Love does thrive against pressure and the Vikings will be bringing the house with Green Bay’s RB woes. The Vikings have the better play makers and are at home. I think they manage the game with Murray and lean on the defense and run game.
