The Spain women’s national basketball team defeated Germany, 83-53 in Berlin on Friday evening. It was the first game of Group A play in the FIBA Women’s World Cup between both teams.
In short, this game was a complete whooping at the expense of the German hosts. Spain held Germany to 29 percent shooting while shooting 53 percent from the field themselves. The only thing that held the Spanish from an even bigger victory was free throw shooting. They shot just 41 percent from the free throw line, 7-of-17.
Yeah, that was … bad. But everything else wasn’t!
Washington Mystics guard Alicia Florez came off the bench, scoring 3 points and dished 5 assists. Awa Fam led the Spanish with 17 points and 4 rebounds. Leonie Fiebich led the Germans with 13 points.
Spain plays Mali tomorrow at 5:30 a.m. ET tomorrow to continue group play. While Mali isn’t favored, now isn’t the time to take it easy.
