You’d be forgiven if you’ve decided to stay focused on Saturday night, especially since proud Myers Park alumnus Drake Maye didn’t exactly light the world on fire Sunday. We were all witness to an event that will be replayed for generations alongside the hype real for every game in the Carolina-Duke Rivalry from here on out. As Adam Lucas pointed out on Monday’s Carolina Insider podcast, buzzer beaters are so rare in this series, and a Carolina version just hasn’t happened on ESPN’s airwaves. Now
as they hype the game, they’ll have the ability to show their own video of a great Carolina moment alongside other infamous buzzer beaters.
It was just great. So the season is over right?
Wait, I’m getting word — oh, there’s a game tonight?
Yes, while we are all basking the glory of a great win and have gotten used to the fact that there are several days between games, the Tar Heels got one night to enjoy it. There are, in fact, eight more conference games this season. Once the basketball team walked into the practice gym on Sunday it was about the next game — which happens to be tonight, against the Hurricanes in Coral Gables.
This doesn’t even have the makings of a trap game. A trap game is one where you go up against a basement-dwelling team, expect to walk all over them, and just sleepwalk your way to a loss as they look to actually take advantage of you still dwelling on the previous game. Miami is good. They are 7-3 in the ACC along with the Tar Heels, though it is fair to wonder how inflated their record is, as a peek at their schedule doesn’t show a win over anyone strong. They’ve gotten got by Florida State, Cal, and only beat Boston College by six on Saturday. But they are at home, are fighting the Tar Heels at the top of the ACC Standings, and any road contest in the ACC is not going to be easy.
We’ll see how well this group is able to recover from such an emotional contest on Saturday that led to them celebrating with everyone on Franklin Street. Less than 48 hours after that contest, they are on a plane to Coral Gables, and it’s something they’ll have to get used to the rest of the regular season as they still have NC State next week, Clemson, Louisville, and a rematch with Duke on the schedule.
