Newcastle United’s summer was always going to be one filled with difficult decisions as interest in key players was expected, and it’s only growing, creating very serious doubts about whether this will be a retool of Eddie Howe’s XI or rather a full-blown rebuild.
According to the Daily Mail’s Tom Collomosse and Craig Hope, Arsenal held talks with Bruno Guimaraes’ camp before Friday, and Newcastle were braced for a formal approach and an offer from the Gunners.
“Newcastle are braced for an approach
from Arsenal for Bruno Guimaraes after the Premier League champions held talks with the player’s camp,” the Daily Mail reported.
The report states that representatives of the player in the UK are gauging the market for the Brazil international, who is currently at the 2026 World Cup.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta wants to strengthen Arsenal’s midfield ahead of their title defence, with Guimaraes identified as one of several options, and the Magpies now pretty much set to, likely, lose all three of Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali, and Bruno this summer. Ugh.
The 28-year-old, however, has not indicated that he wants to leave Newcastle, although the Daily Mail reported there is awareness that his name is being discussed elsewhere and the appeal of playing for the Premier League champions, on top of approaching 30 years of age, might swing his mindset.
On the flip side of the coin, Chronicle Live quickly reported that Newcastle’s stance is firm and that Guimaraes is not for sale.
The Athletic confirmed Arsenal’s first verbal offer on Friday, quoting it at £60 million.
“Arsenal have made a verbal offer to sign Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes,” the report says. “The proposal, which was communicated to Newcastle through intermediaries, was worth less than £60million and has been rebuffed by the north east club.”
According to The Athletic, “Newcastle insist they will not entertain offers” for Bruno, as big as they might eventually get.
