The trade winds are blowing in Foxborough. On Monday, the team of head coach Mike Vrabel decided to make a move involving interior offensive lineman Caedan Wallace: the former third-round draft pick was sent to the Miami Dolphins in a late-round draft pick exchange.
Wallace and a 2029 seventh-round selection were shipped to Florida for a 2028 sixth-rounder. Let’s break down what the move means for the Patriots from a big-picture perspective.
Writing on the wall
When the Patriots drafted Wallace, they did so in hopes of
him becoming their right tackle of the future. Those plans were quickly scrapped: instead of competing for the position in his second season, and first under the new Mike Vrabel-led coaching staff, he was moved inside to guard — a position he had played in practice at Penn State and during the draft preparation, but never in an actual game in either college or the NFL.
What followed was effectively a redshirt season. Wallace took the field as an offensive lineman in just one game in 2025, a blowout win over the Jets in Week 17. Other than that, he mostly was part of the inactives list on game day.
Heading into 2026, Wallace started out with the second-stringers. However, the Patriots’ sixth practice of training camp brought a change: instead of lining up in his usual position at left guard, second-year man Mehki Butler was the No. 2 left guard of choice. Wallace, meanwhile, was demoted to third string — an ominous sign that eventually set the stage for New England parting way with him.
O-line competition evolving
With Wallace no longer in the picture, the Patriots’ interior offensive line is now down to eight players:
Interior offensive line (8): Alijah Vera-Tucker (75 | LG), Jared Wilson (55 | C), Mike Onwenu (71 | RG), Ben Brown (77), Andrew Rupcich (67), Mehki Butler (63), Jacob Rizy (64), JonDarius Morgan (69)
Four of the eight can be seen as either roster locks or fairly safe bets to make the team: Alijah Vera-Tucker, Jared Wilson and Mike Onwenu are the starters, with Ben Brown the top backup. Behind that quartet, Andrew Rupcich seems like the best bet if New England wants to go five deep.
The Patriots recently also had veteran Greg Van Roten in town for a workout, a possible reflection of how they feel about their center and guard depth.
Marginal gains
From a draft value perspective, the Patriots and Dolphins exchanging late-round picks in 2028 and 2029 is negligible. It does, however, mean that New England now is up to six selections in 2028 after it had traded away its first-rounder to Philadelphia in the A.J. Brown trade and a seventh-round pick in the Ja’Lynn Polk package to New Orleans.
In total, the Patriots’ 2028 capital now looks like this:

In 2029, the Patriots are now also down to six picks; the seventh-rounder they sent to the Dolphins is the first time they have either added or subtracted from that particular pool of selections.
While we are on the topic of gains, the Patriots did increase their 2026 cap space by moving on from Wallace. Originally carrying a cap hit of $1.648 million, that number is now down to $303,782: his fully-guaranteed 2026 signing bonus proration, which now moves to the “dead cap” section of the payroll. The same, of course, is true for the 2027 proration also worth $303,782.
Meanwhile, the team freed up cap space in both 2026 and 2027 by removing Wallace’s base salaries of $1.344 million and $1.619 million, respectively. For this year, and with the NFL’s Top 51 rule still in place, this means a net cap space increase of $339,392.
Rinse/repeat
The Patriots being set to release a former third-round draft pick only to reverse course at the last second sounds familiar to you? That’s because it is.
Back in early April, reports surfaced that the team was about to waive 2023 third-round selection Marte Mapu. He was never actually put on waivers, though, and instead shipped to Houston: the Texans decided to send a 2027 sixth-round pick to New England for Mapu and a 2027 seventh-rounder — not quite the same trade, but the same circumstances
Two left standing
The Patriots’ first draft of the post-Bill Belichick era brought the team a franchise quarterback, and little else. With Wallace now gone, after all, only two of the eight original selections remain in New England.

Drake Maye obviously is the one pick the Patriots needed to get right, and so far it seems that they did. That said, the draft as a whole looks a lot like the one in 2000, that resulted in Tom Brady and little else of long-term value. Not a bad outcome by any means, but still well short of expectation at various spots.
Long snapper competition?
Wallace getting traded to Miami was not the only domino to fall on Monday. The Patriots also re-signed long snapper Niko Lalos, who had been with them earlier in the offseason.
Does this mean a long snapper competition is back on the menu? Not necessarily, because it appears Lalos was merely brought aboard to serve as depth behind Julian Ashby. The incumbent, after all, was limited during Monday’s practice due to what has been reported by ESPN’s Mike Reiss to be an ankle injury.
