Newcastle United’s dramatic reshaping of its attack is set to continue on deadline day, with the club now agreeing a deal that will allow its record signing to leave St. James’ Park only one year after his arrival.
Nick Woltemade is set to join Juventus on loan after negotiations accelerated over the weekend.
According to Fabrizio Romano, reporting on Monday evening, Newcastle and the Serie A club have reached a verbal agreement for the 24-year-old Germany international.
“Juventus reached verbal agreement
with Newcastle to sign Nick Woltemade, here we go!” Romano reported. “Surprise move reported since last night has been agreed as Woltemade will become a Juventus player on Deadline Day.”
Per Romano’s information, Juventus will pay Newcastle a £3.5 million (€4 million) loan fee. Most importantly for Woltemade’s future in Tyneside, the agreement doesn’t include any option or obligation to buy the Germany international next summer.
Sky Sport Italy’s Gianluca Di Marzio subsequently provided an important update from the player’s side, reporting that Woltemade has given the green light to the transfer.
“Woltemade gives the green light to Juventus,” Di Marzio wrote, adding that his travel and medical have been organized for Tuesday.
On Tuesday morning, Sky Sports’ Florian Plattenberg confirmed the deal.
“Agreement reached with Newcastle, as revealed. Woltemade has now given his final green light to the move,” Plattenberg wrote. “The 24 y/o forward will fly to Turin this morning. Medical today. Loan deal without a buy option. Loan fee around €4m.”
The agreement brings Woltemade’s uncertain summer to a conclusion after interest emerged from several clubs. Juventus, Borussia Dortmund, Napoli and Stuttgart were all linked with potential loan moves during the closing stages of the window, but ultimately the biggest club of them all landed the German genius.
Newcastle paid a club-record £69 million (€80 million) to sign Woltemade from Stuttgart last summer, but the forward struggled to establish himself consistently during his debut campaign. He still provided a reminder of his talent in Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Tottenham. Woltemade came off the bench and immediately contributed to Yoane Wissa’s goal, heading Lewis Hall’s corner back across the six-yard box for the striker to finish.
Woltemade’s departure became significantly easier for Newcastle to sanction after the club agreed a €60 million (£51.4 million) plus add-ons deal with Lille for Matias Fernandez-Pardo on Monday. The Athletic reported that the Belgian can operate on the left or as a No. 9, providing Matthias Jaissle with another option through the middle.
The absence of any purchase clause also means Newcastle retains control over Woltemade’s long-term future. A productive season in Turin could rebuild the German’s confidence and value before he returns to Tyneside next summer.
