The Huskies filled perhaps one of its most important positions on the staff in the current era of college basketball on Wednesday, officially naming Charlie Stevens as the program’s next general manager.
Stevens comes to Storrs after spending the past five years in the front office of the San Antonio Spurs. He worked his way up from a “Basketball Operations Assistant for Scouting and Strategy” role all the way up to “Director of Grassroots Scouting” for the Spurs, helping the franchise scout out some key talent that went to the NBA Finals this past June, including former Husky Stephon Castle.
The first GM in program history was Tom Moore, who served in the position last season before announcing his retirement. According to a release from UConn, Stevens’ top responsibilities will include “work(ing) directly in concert with Coach Hurley on scheduling, roster construction, player development and evaluation, medical oversight, support staff oversight, NIL strategy and operations, development, administration, revenue generation and more.”
Stevens played basketball at Division III Clark University until he graduated in 2021. From there, he took a role as a player agent overseas before quickly landing his gig in San Antonio. With the current landscape of college athletics, having someone to “worry” about all of the things that Stevens will be assigned to just takes more off the already full plates of Dan Hurley and his staff.
The Huskies also announced a pair of promotions along with Stevens. Andrew Hurley was promoted to Assistant General Manager and Connor Creech was promoted to Video Coordinator and Director of Analytics. Andrew’s responsibilities will include working directly with Stevens, while Creech will assist the staff with video scouting as well as help implement more data analytics to evaluate player performances and development on the floor. Both Andrew and Creech started their coaching careers as graduate assistants, Andrew in 2024-25 and Creech in 2025-26.
