We’re going to learn a lot about the New York Giants over the next few weeks. The team was delivered a gut punch with the news that second-year quarterback Jaxson Dart is out for the season with a knee injury. But coach John Harbaugh didn’t get a $100 million contract just to captain the franchise through smooth seas. This type of adversity is when Harbaugh’s
talents as a culture-building coach should emerge.
Harbaugh isn’t a miracle worker. The Ravens went 6-12 in the 18 games they started a backup during the seven seasons since Lamar Jackson became their starter. The Giants don’t need a miracle, but they need Harbaugh’s leadership to prevent Dart’s injury from sending the season off the rails.

Q: Like you said, the NFL is high-level drama. With everything that has transpired this week, are you just eager to get to Sunday and turn the page?
Harbaugh: The guys are excited about the game. It’s an opportunity to get to 2-1, 1-0 for the week is the mantra. Circumstances are always what they are. So yeah, it’s a tough circumstance with the quarterback. It’s unique. We’re not the only team that’s ever faced that, not even the only team that’s facing it this week in the National Football League, and we won’t be the last team to face it. It’s not something that’s unknown to mankind. It’s an adversity that’s going to hopefully serve to make us a better football team and that’s really the goal – to become the best football team we can be. But within that, play our best football game this week and we have a team that’s really determined and really locked in to do that. Jaxson (Dart) is supporting that. He’s been in meetings all week supporting the guys and supporting Jameis (Winston). So yeah, we’re excited to play the game.

The Giants’ offense will look different against the Titans. They’ll have to cater it to QB Jameis Winston’s skill set, which doesn’t include the same running ability as Jaxson Dart (knee). The Giants already have the plays in their playbook. Guard Jon Runyan said they have more than 300 plays already. Now, OC Matt Nagy & Co. will lean on what works better for Winston. That likely means using Winston’s arm and ability to throw downfield to complement the running game.

Beckham and Jaxson Dart never appeared to develop any obvious chemistry during training camp, but Jameis Winston and Beckham had a rapport. They’re both veterans. Winston often plants his back foot and fires, and Beckham is a precise, timing-based route runner. And Beckham logged more snaps with the backups than the starters, giving him more time on task with Winston.
And yet when Winston took over for Dart in Monday’s first quarter, and as the Giants’ offense floundered while falling behind big, Beckham was nailed to the bench. It just seems Beckham should be worked in as an option, particularly with Winston now under center.

With respect and love to Jaxson Dart, whom he called “my best friend” on the day the 23-year-old was placed on injured reserve with knee surgery pending, and Jameis Winston’s ascension to a starting role, Skattebo has a solution to replacing the juice missing without Dart.

The Giants need their defense to lift them in Sunday’s home game against the Titans — which still seems winnable, even without quarterback Jaxson Dart.
But if coordinator Dennard Wilson’s group plays as poorly as it did Monday night in Los Angeles, the Giants are doomed — and coach John Harbaugh’s once-promising first season might begin to spiral out of control. On Sunday, they Giants will turn to a fascinating potential trade piece, outside linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux, since elite edge rusher Brian Burns will be sidelined by an ankle sprain he sustained in that 28-6 loss to the Rams.

Dominic Zvada supplied every Giants point in Monday night’s 28-6 loss to the Rams, hitting from 24 yards late in the first half and from 52 in the third quarter. “From the day we got him here, always believed in him, and just needed to get him out there to get him those opportunities,” Horton told reporters on Wednesday. “And we know who he is, he knows who he is. And so, it was very encouraging to get him out there in a game setting and let him kick that 52-yard field goal.”
Jordan Stout is the other half of that battery. Horton said the punter’s ability to flip the field has been outstanding, including 70-plus-yard boots and one that approached 80. That only works if the rest of the unit lets it work. “You can’t allow him to do the things that he does if you don’t allow your punt coverage, also those other guys to work,” Horton said. “Situationally, we’re just allowing him to be who he is, and it just starts with everybody understanding what kind of punter we have. We protect the punt, and then we need all-out effort. That’s from all the other 10 guys.”
