Pittsburgh Steelers running back Kenneth Gainwell is in the midst of a breakout campaign, emerging as one of the most reliable and versatile weapons in Pittsburgh’s offense. Through the late stages of the season,
Gainwell has posted 451 rushing yards, 332 receiving yards, and six total touchdowns — all career highs and a reflection of his expanded role.
When asked what has fueled his success, Gainwell did not hesitate. His initial answer was just two words: Aaron Rodgers.
“He is trusting me,” Gainwell said. When asked to expand upon what he trusts, the versatile back said, “my hands and just doing the small things is what I’ve been working at.”
Since Rodgers took over under center, Gainwell’s usage and impact have steadily increased. Rodgers’ willingness to lean on him in critical moments — particularly in the passing game and in high-leverage situations — has allowed Gainwell to showcase his complete skill set. Whether it’s picking up a blitz, converting a third down with yards after catch, or extending a drive with disciplined running, Gainwell has become a dependable outlet in the Steelers’ offense.
Beyond production, Gainwell emphasized that Rodgers’ character defines him as much as his performance. How has he appeased the future Hall of Fame quarterback?
“Doing things the right way, being accountable, and earning trust,” said Gainwell.
That trust has paid dividends. Rodgers’ late-season resurgence has propelled Pittsburgh to the brink of an AFC North title, and Gainwell’s steady presence has been a major factor in that surge. His ability to contribute in all phases has helped balance the offense and keep defenses guessing, particularly as the games have grown more meaningful.
As the Steelers push toward the postseason, one could argue that Gainwell’s breakout has been more than timely — it has been essential. And in his own words, it all starts with trust from a future Hall of Fame quarterback and a commitment to mastering the details.
