Juventus have already pivoted once when it comes to their top goalkeeper target. It looks like they’re going to pivot again because they aren’t willing to meet Aston Villa’s asking price for Emi Martinez. So that means it’s either a surprise or a relatively uninspiring signing is going to be on its way in all likelihood.
In terms of a new target, this one is definitely a surprise.
You can now add Orlando Gill, who just came off a breakout run at the World Cup earlier this summer, to the list of goalkeeper
targets as Juventus move away from trying to sign Martinez, according to a report from TuttoJuve’s Mirko Di Natale. Juventus have made contact with Gill’s current club, San Lorenzo in Argentina, and is one to consider an option in goal, according to Di Natale. Gill, who turned 26 years old on June 11, reportedly has a buyout clause around €8.5 million and has one year remaining on his current contract with San Lorenzo.
Manchester United have also been linked with a potential move for Gill.
It’s always a bit of a cautious approach when you’re targeting a relatively unknown commodity after a strong World Cup — especially when it comes to the guys who basically come out of nowhere like Gill has. Did some clubs know of him before the World Cup? Surely. But did the World Cup elevate his profile where you now have clubs like Juventus and Manchester United being linked to him? Of course.
Who knows where Gill fits into all of the goalkeeper options as Juve have pivoted away from Martinez and Alisson Becker before him. We know that Juventus want to add a goalkeeper during the final weeks of the summer window and that Guglielmo Vicario is probably the leader in the clubhouse right now. But who really knows how that all plays out because this is entire chase for a new goalkeeper is turning into a saga that probably should have been solved weeks ago.
But at least we get to add Gill to the list of names, and learn a little bit about him at the same time.
