Real Madrid are among the clubs interested in Racing Santander midfielder Sergio Martínez, according to a report from AS, with the 19-year-old emerging as one of the latest young Spanish talents to attract attention from some of La Liga’s biggest teams.
Martínez’s rapid rise has been particularly striking. In the space of roughly seven months, he has gone from playing youth football at Racing to making an impression with the senior team and attracting interest from Real Madrid, Barcelona and Villarreal.
According to AS, Madrid had already been monitoring Martínez’s development before his breakthrough into senior football. His performances have now prompted the club to explore the possibility of reaching an agreement with Racing over his future.
Martínez reportedly has a release clause worth €3 million, although Madrid would prefer to negotiate directly with Racing rather than trigger it. The report states that the club have communicated their interest and are looking into an agreement that would satisfy Madrid, Racing and the player.
One possibility would be for Madrid to sign Martínez while allowing him to remain at Racing for another season. Castilla has also been discussed as a potential destination, although his rapid progress at senior level could complicate the idea of dropping back into reserve-team football.
Madrid’s interest is not based solely on his first appearances in La Liga. According to AS, the club have compiled reports on Martínez over recent months and believe his emergence is more than a short-term breakthrough.
What kind of player is Sergio Martínez?
Martínez is a tall and versatile midfielder who can occupy several positions through the middle of the pitch. Standing around 1.85 metres, he has the physical profile to compete in deeper areas while also possessing the technical ability to contribute further forward.
The Spain youth international can operate as a defensive midfielder, central midfielder or in a more advanced role. His combination of size and technique allows him to cover ground defensively and compete physically while remaining comfortable receiving and distributing the ball.
Martínez has also demonstrated an ability to make an immediate contribution in the final third, scoring on his La Liga debut against Villarreal.
His versatility is part of what makes him an intriguing prospect. Rather than fitting neatly into one midfield role at this stage of his development, Martínez has shown qualities associated with several of them: physical presence and defensive awareness deeper on the field, composure in possession centrally, and the ability to move forward and contribute around the penalty area.
For Real Madrid, the reported pursuit would fit a familiar recruitment strategy of attempting to identify young players before their market value increases substantially.
The relatively accessible €3 million clause adds another dimension to the situation, particularly with other clubs also interested. Madrid, however, reportedly want to maintain good relations with Racing and find a negotiated solution rather than simply paying the clause.
Martínez’s immediate future remains unresolved, and there are several possible pathways even if Madrid ultimately secure an agreement. Staying at Racing would provide him with continuity and senior minutes, while moving to Madrid would raise the question of whether Castilla remains an appropriate level given how quickly his career is progressing.
What appears clear is that Martínez’s breakthrough has accelerated the situation. Real Madrid were already watching him; they are now actively exploring how to ensure his future eventually leads to Valdebebas.
