Newcastle United’s pursuit of Lucas Bergvall remains alive heading into the final stretch of the summer transfer window, with the Magpies still considering another attempt to sign the Tottenham midfielder.
Newcastle already had a £46 million (€53 million) offer rejected last month, while Tottenham has been holding out for approximately £60 million (€69 million).
The 20-year-old, however, is believed to remain interested in leaving North London in search of more regular playing time. On top of that,
Newcastle is expected to submit an improved bid sometime soon.
According to Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke, Tottenham’s position has softened of late, with the Sept. 1 deadline approaching quickly. That, in turn, could potentially allow Newcastle to complete a deal without necessarily meeting the reported £60 million asking price.
“With time running out in the summer window, Tottenham would seriously consider any second offer, given Bergvall’s desire to move away,” O’Rourke reported.
If O’Rourke’s report is true, it’d represent a significant boost for Newcastle, which has remained interested while waiting for UEFA’s 45-day player-exchange accounting period to expire. The Magpies, however, haven’t stood pat and have explored several other midfield options, including Joao Palhinha and Nicolas Seiwald, with Man City’s Nico Gonzalez set to become Newcastle’s new leading midfielder if all goes to plan.
Back to Bergvall, O’Rourke reported that Tottenham has become “increasingly resigned” to losing the midfielder after Newcastle and Nott Forest showed interest in the player.
“The Magpies saw their opening offer of £46m knocked back, with the Lilywhites understood to be holding out for £60m,” O’Rourke reported. “Roberto De Zerbi will not push the midfielder out the door, but the club is prepared to ‘reluctantly’ accept an increased offer.”
This latest development leaves Newcastle with a clearer path toward a potential agreement. Tottenham still values Bergvall highly and would prefer to retain him, but an improved second bid could now be enough to convince Spurs to sanction his departure.
