Cleveland Browns Head Coach Todd Monken knows firsthand how difficult it can be to prepare for the Pittsburgh Steelers’ veteran defensive stars — and, jokingly, he would prefer if two of them simply called it a career.
While discussing the challenge of facing Pittsburgh’s defense, Monken was asked about preparing for T.J. Watt, Cam Heyward and the Steelers’ defensive front. His tongue-in-cheek response made it clear he has had enough of dealing with the longtime stars.
“I think it’s about time that
he retires … and Heyward and all those guys,” Monken said. “Credit to those guys. How long they’ve done it … at the level they’ve done it. It’s been tough to go against.”
Monken’s comments were clearly delivered with a healthy dose of humor, but they also served as a compliment to the longevity and consistency of two of Pittsburgh’s most recognizable defensive players.
Watt remains one of the focal points of the Steelers’ defense, while Heyward has continued to anchor the interior of the unit deep into his career. Together, the veterans have spent years creating problems for opposing offenses, and the two will try and help the Steelers overcome their Thursday night road woes in Cleveland this week.
