Deep down in the recesses of their minds, or maybe just on the top, everyone has some opinions that most other people don’t agree with. Some of them may be about consequential things in the world, or some of them may be as unimportant as “I don’t like (popular food item X).”
Today, I want to know your most unpopular opinions when it comes to North Carolina Tar Heels’ sports. I want to know if you have any controversial takes on a current Carolina sports team. Maybe you believe something no one else
does about something from UNC sports history. Hey, maybe there’s just something about the Heels in general that no one else backs you up on. No matter what it is, now is the time to let everyone know, and maybe we can even convince some other people that we’re right.
My biggest unpopular opinion surrounds the 1924 men’s basketball national championship. Personally, I do not think that the banner that UNC current hangs in the Smith Center should be with the rest of the national championship banners that came from the NCAA Tournament titles.
Now, I don’t think that Carolina shouldn’t honor that team. I think it’s more than appropriate to have a banner honoring the team somewhere in the Dean Dome rafters. After all, that claim doesn’t come out of thin air — they were named champions by an approved selector. However, I think trying to equate it to the other championships is a bit much.
If you look at any of the six NCAA Tournament titles, the runs those Tar Heel teams had to make are chock full of huge games and all feature tough roads before they got to cut down the nets. The 1924 UNC basketball team didn’t play a national tournament, and — while they did go undefeated — their schedule features some odd games. Yes, they did play colleges and teams you’ve heard of, but their schedule that year also features games against the Durham Elks and the Charlotte YMCA. It’s not that 1924 team’s fault that they didn’t win the NCAA Tournament; it didn’t exist then, and maybe they would’ve. However, they didn’t have to walk the tightrope of six games in a single elimination tournament that the rest did. If I was in charge, I’d put a banner for the 1924 team elsewhere in the rafters and just make the six NCAA Tournament championships the focus when it comes to the rafters.
My other one is just that calling that team in Durham “Dook” isn’t funny. That’s not to say that there isn’t a way to make fun of them, as there’s plenty of material. I just think that we can collectively do better than making a poop joke.
Those are mine, but what are your UNC “unpopular opinions?”
