Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany is not quite sure where SV Wehen Wiesbaden is on a map, but he does know the squad could be a problem for his team.
“I know it’s close to Frankfurt, but I have to look for it geographically first. What they do very well is counterattacks. They do that at a very high level, with one or two touches. They have players who have a feel for the space. That’s why they’re dangerous. Of course, we’re the favorites. We’re looking forward to it; it’s not just about the games
at the Allianz Arena. It’s also great to play in stadiums like that,” said Kompany (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “The desire (to get to Berlin for the DFB-Pokal final) is huge, definitely. I already felt that last season. The hunger is even bigger this season, the time since the last title win has gotten even longer. Our first final is tomorrow, that’s the most important thing right now.”
As expected with any early DFB-Pokal matchup, there could be some changes to the squad. In goal, fans can expect to see youngster Jonas Urbig instead of captain Manuel Neuer. Otherwise, fans might see a lot of familiar faces in the lineup.
“(Urbig has) worked very hard. Of course, it helps that he has a great role model in Manuel Neuer. He prepared very well and performed very well so far. I see that he’s made progress, and hopefully the fans can see that as well,” said Kompany. “It’s not about resting players yet. We’ve started very well, but we’ll see if we can play three games in one week. If Leon Goretzka makes it through the final training session today, he’ll be there as usual. We’re happy it wasn’t serious. Everyone who was available against Leipzig is there.”
However, Kompany did double-back and leave room for some changes.
“I don’t like the word ‘rotation’. I don’t want to say too much about the lineup. The most important thing is that we want to make it to Berlin. I have complete respect for the opponent. The team that starts tomorrow will have a chance to win. All players are important parts of our team. We will be competitive. Of course, we want everyone to stay fit and can’t afford to do anything crazy,” said Kompany.
Bayern Munich got off to a red-hot start this season and we are thrilled with the early returns. With the end of the transfer window coming up, there is still much to discuss, so let’s not waste any more time. - Joshua Kimmich is a constant…and a necessity.
- The backline still needs a big test.
- Bayern Munich could miss out on Nick Woltemade in 2026 as the bidding could open up to other clubs.
