Something that I didn’t think about enough when Brian Callahan put together his staff after he was hired as the head coach was how inexperienced they were. For me, the excitement of finally having an offense-minded
coach distracted from the fact that he and his other two playcallers, defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson and special teams coordinator Colt Anderson, had never called a play in an NFL game. That was a terrible decision.
The Titans are not making the same mistake this time. Robert Saleh will call the defensive plays. Not only has he been a head coach in the NFL before, but he has also spent a lot of time calling defensive plays as a defensive coordinator. Brian Daboll has also been a head coach who has spent multiple years calling plays. The same can be said of John Fassel, who actually spent three games as the interim coach of the Los Angeles Rams after Jeff Fisher was fired in 2016.

Now, this doesn’t mean with 100% certainty that this staff will do better than the last one, but there is no doubt they are in a much better position to start.
