Over the years, Mike Krzyzewski has done commercials for many companies. This State Farm ad may not be his finest, but it’s fun, and it may have some historical relevance.
In the ad, Coach K is essentially running a fantasy camp. The ad dates from around 2003–2005, which aligns with when the Coach K Fantasy Camp (K Academy) began.
So it’s entirely possible that this ad reflected the planning and thought that went into the K Academy business model. We just probably didn’t know it at that time.
The ad
is in two parts. In the first part, Coach K is telling his campers not to be afraid of mistakes. The second part compares the class of what Coach K is doing to what “Coach J” offers his campers.
The point of the ad is to compare what State Farm offers to what their rivals offer. It’s a fun and whimsical ad, but on a 1-10 scale, we’d give it a 5. It’s not nearly as imaginative as the “Yes I Can” ad from Bud Light, which remains arguably the best of Coach K’s ads.
