Happy New Years (early)! On Monday, Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman announced on X that he will return to Notre Dame to be the head coach in 2026.
So that’s the good news.
To be honest, I heard about a month ago that the contract extension was done and Freeman was locked into Notre Dame. Since then, NFL rumors swirled (especially with the New York Giants) and no announcement was put in place. Last week, I was told that an announcement for an extension was coming on Monday (today) and yet… I didn’t quite expect this single post on X to be the thing. As of publishing this article, there still has been no official press release from Notre Dame (which I expect maybe later today then?).
So that’s great news actually, but what about 2027 and beyond? If we know anything for sure in this world, it’s that contract extensions really don’t mean anything other than the next year is guaranteed. It really seemed like Freeman had more interest in the NFL than I previously expected, and should a better offer come his way after next year — what happens then?
As with everything else… we will cross that bridge when we get there. Marcus Freeman is returning to South Bend to coach Notre Dame football in 2026, and we should all be happy enough with that set of facts. Lord knows it scared the hell out of Lincoln Riley, Jen Cohen, and the rest of those Southern Cowards… but more on that later.
