Bayern Munich may be on the market for defenders this summer. According to a report by German journalists Philipp Kessler and Vinzent Tschirpke (via @iMiaSanMia) Harry Kane is trying to convince England teammate and longtime Liverpool target Marc Guéhi to join him at the Bavarian capital.
Guéhi, who currently plays for Crystal Palace, is one of the hottest defenders on the market right now. The England international has a contract which expires in 2026, meaning that teams can negotiate with him from
next month onward. As a free transfer, 25-year-old is a major target for clubs across Europe.
Before this, Bayern Munich were not linked with a center back. However, with recent rumblings about Nico Schlotterbeck in the media, it seems that the club is looking into options for replacing Dayot Upamecano should such a thing become necessary.
The Frenchman has a contract which expires next summer (like Guéhi) and extension talks have been delayed over the question of a signing bonus.
So, is Harry Kane playing matchmaker and trying to find Bayern an Upamecano replacement? This wouldn’t be the first time he has had influence on the team’s transfers. Back when Eric Dier was signed from Tottenham Hotspur, Kane was said to have played a key role in the move.
It is unknown whether Guéhi will actually want to leave the Premier League and head to Germany for the next phase of his career. Liverpool FC were actually very close to signing him last summer — the deal ultimately fell through because Palace put their foot down.
English players tend to want to stay in England, and being a free transfer, Guéhi will command a hefty signing bonus. It is hard to see this deal going through, when Bayern have the more feasible option of Schlotterbeck as a Plan B. Plan A remains an Upamecano extension, which the club continues to work on.
Let’s see where this transfer saga takes us.
