Riding a five-game winning streak into Thursday night’s game, the Yankees again couldn’t quite step up in a key division game. Opening up a four-game set against the Red Sox, the Bombers couldn’t punch back after losing a 3-2 lead, stranding 10 runners on base in total in a 6-3 loss. Tonight, they look to bounce back and regain the ground they lost in the playoff races on Thursday.
For the second game of the set tonight, Max Fried will take the mound. Ever since leaving a July start early with blisters,
Fried has not looked like the same pitcher he was in the first couple months, posting a 7.20 ERA over his last 30 innings. Every start is a new chance for him to get back on track, which the Yankees could really use, especially after dropping their sixth in a row to Boston on the season.
As for Boston, Brayan Bello gets the ball. Bello already has one very good outing against the Yankees on his season résumé, shutting them out over seven innings back in June. Meanwhile, the Red Sox are also giving a MLB debut to prospect Jhostynxon Garcia (fittingly nicknamed “the Password”), who will hit fifth and play center field.
The Yankees had Giancarlo Stanton playing right field last night, but as Aaron Boone said yesterday, they are resting him tonight with Aaron Judge still stuck on DH duty and a desire to play it safe with Stanton. New York will line up Jasson Domínguez, Trent Grisham, and Cody Bellinger from left to right in the outfield, while Ben Rice moves from behind the plate to first base (spelling Paul Goldschmidt against the righty Bello) with Austin Wells donning the tools of ignorance.
We hope you can come join us in the game thread for tonight’s action!
