With the World Series upon us, we thought we’d spend some time looking at iconic moments from past series. In this case, let’s look at the legendary play from the 1954 World Series.
Mays, who played for the Giants in New York and then San Francisco and a brief stint with the New York Mets at the end of his career, entered the MLB after a brief stint with the Birmingham Black Barons just four years after Jackie Robinson broke the color line in 1947.
Mays was a superb athlete and in particular a great
defensive player. He won the Golden Glove 12 times and was a 24-time All-Star and his offense was superb as well.
What he’s most remembered for though is that brilliant catch in the 1954 World Series. It was 2-2 in the eighth and Cleveland’s Vic Wertz hit the ball deep to center field. Mays ran back to get under the ball and turned his back, understanding the trajectory of the ball. He caught it, without seeing it again, just before he hit the wall. It is one of the absolutely legendary plays in the history of the game and is play the Say Hey kid is most remembered for today.
