While everyone in Morgantown has been busy stressing over football, WVU women’s soccer has been quietly putting together one of the best seasons on campus.
And somehow, they only have one loss.
Yes, just one.
The Mountaineers are sitting at 9-1-2, and at this point, maybe it’s time more WVU fans started paying attention to what’s happening over at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. Because while some WVU fans are spending their Saturdays questioning everything, the women’s soccer team
is giving them something to actually celebrate.
And honestly, it’s about time.
WVU recently picked up two big wins, taking down No. 20 BYU 2-0 before following it up with a 2-1 victory over Utah. Those wins are just the latest examples of how well this team has been playing. And let’s be real, winning nine games while losing only once is not something that should go unnoticed.
Especially when you are doing it against some pretty good competition.
One of the biggest reasons for WVU’s success has been its ability to find ways to win. Whether it’s shutting teams out or battling through close games, the Mountaineers have continued to get the job done. They are not always going to score four or five goals, and every game is not going to be easy. But finding ways to win close games is exactly what good teams do.
And WVU is proving it belongs in that conversation. What’s even more exciting is that the season is not over yet.
With conference play continuing and the postseason getting closer, the Mountaineers have an opportunity to turn an already impressive season into something even bigger. Of course, there’s still plenty of work to do. One good stretch does not guarantee a championship, and the competition is not getting any easier. But with only one loss on the record, there’s a pretty good reason to believe this team can keep making noise.
And while football will probably always get most of the attention in Morgantown, women’s soccer is making a pretty strong case for why fans should be spending some of their weekends at Dick Dlesk. Because at this point, if you’re looking for a WVU team that’s consistently finding ways to win, you might want to head over to the soccer stadium.
No offense to anyone else, of course.
The Mountaineers are winning, they’re competing against ranked opponents, and they are giving fans something positive to talk about.
What more could you ask for?
And the best part is that WVU is not just beating teams it should beat. The Mountaineers have shown they can compete with ranked opponents, and those are the kinds of wins that matter when the postseason gets closer.
WVU will look to keep things rolling when it takes on UCF on Friday, giving the Mountaineers another chance to add to their impressive season.
So, while everyone else is counting down the days until the next football game, maybe take a second to appreciate what WVU women’s soccer has been doing.
Because nine wins, two draws and just one loss?
That’s pretty hard to ignore.
And if the Mountaineers keep playing like this, WVU fans might have a lot more soccer to celebrate before the season is over.
Who would’ve thought soccer might be the least stressful part of being a WVU fan right now?
