San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings did not practice for the third day in a row. That’s generally not a good sign for a player heading into Sunday. The Arizona Cardinals could be down two cornerbacks. Both teams might be short-handed in Week 3 if Jennings cannot play. He’s not the only wideout on the roster to miss Friday’s session.
Rookie Jordan Watkins went from not being listed on the injury report to being limited with a calf injury on Thursday to not practicing on Friday.
Left tackle
Trent Williams is one of the few players on the team who can still play on game day without practicing all week. There were conflicting reports about whether he practiced or not.
Yetur Gross-Matos also sat out of practice. However, that was the case last week for Gross-Matos, and he still played. It’s worth noting he only played 15 snaps against the Saints, which was 22.4 percent of the total defensive snaps.
Fullback Kyle Juszczyk and defensive back Siran Neal no longer were wearing blue non-contact jerseys, suggesting they’ve cleared the concussion protocol.
Quarterback Brock Purdy practiced on Friday. He’s been limited in practice this week, which is encouraging after not participating at all in either of the three practices last week.
Here’s the injury report:
OUT:
T Spencer Burford (knee)
WR Jordan Watkins (calf)
QUESTIONABLE:
G Connor Colby (groin)
WR Jauan Jennings (shoulder, ankle)
QB Brock Purdy (toe, shoulder)
Shanahan confirmed that Watkins hurt himself in practice on Thursday and will likely miss around 3-4 weeks with a calf injury, making him a candidate for the Injured Reserve.
Shanahan believes Purdy made “a lot of progress” this week and is hopeful that Purdy can suit up this weekend. The team will see how Purdy looks on Saturday, have a conversation with him, but also believes “it’s highly unlikely” that Brock will start. Shanahan said Purdy will be QB2 or the emergency quarterback if he’s active.
The 49ers are trying to avoid Purdy coming back too early and making his injury, whether it’s the toe or the shoulder, worse than it was before. Purdy’s toe injury isn’t something the Niners would know about until Sunday, which is why he’s not projected to start.
Colby also got hurt during Thursday’s practice. Shanahan said if Colby can’t play, it’ll be between undrafted rookie Drew Moss or Nick Zakelj starting at left guard.
