During his pregame press conference, German national team head coach Julian Nagelsmann was asked why he keeps giving so many chances to former Bayern Munich winger Leroy Sané.
Nagelsmann attempted to detail his rationale, though fans might not agree with the manager’s assertions.
“The arguments are that we need 1v1 players, we don’t have that many of them, though there are alternatives. Games like the one against Slovakia are the benchmark for Leroy. He should always reach that level. The last game
against Switzerland was okay, not really good and not very bad. Leroy knows what’s needed of him and he has to show it. In the end we’ll decide what’s best for the squad,” said Nagelsmann (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “There are certain profiles we have to have in order to be able to face different styles of play. We don’t have many players who can take on opponents on the right wing. Lenny [Karl] did very well, but we have to consider how long he can play and how stable he will remain. Jamie Leweling can also play there, but is currently injured. Hopefully, we can make the right decision in two months.”
Interestingly, Nagelsmann did not reference Bayern Munich star Jamal Musiala.
Regardless, it could also be argued that everyone on Germany’s staff has seen more than enough of Sané and that this time period could be better served by learning more about those players seeking to break into the squad, rather than a guy looking to hang on.
