Six teams entered Week 8 sporting undefeated records, and three hailed from the Big 12.
However, two of those Big 12 teams — BYU and Texas Tech — hit the road last Saturday and watched their perfect records disappear. The lone Big 12 team that survived the week unscathed was Utah, which protected its undefeated start under head coach Morgan Scalley by rallying past Houston in front of a raucous crowd in Salt Lake City.
Now, the Utes travel two time zones east to the same venue where Texas Tech’s undefeated
season came to a screeching halt. No. 6 Utah (7-0, 4-0 Big 12), sporting its highest ranking since 2019, puts the nation’s longest winning streak on the line at Cincinnati (5-2, 2-2 Big 12), which sits just outside the AP Top 25.
Here are three matchups that determine whether Utah maintains perfection or if Cincinnati pulls off a second-straight Top 10 upset at Nippert Stadium:
Dampier’s dual-threat ability vs. Cincinnati’s defense
Utah trailed Houston 10-0 in the third quarter last week, putting its undefeated record in serious jeopardy. However, the Utes closed the game on a 21-3 run largely thanks to the mobility of quarterback Devon Dampier. Against a Houston defense that had been reliable in the tackling department, Dampier consistently evaded defenders, finishing with 150 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
Dampier thrives on designed runs and improvised scrambles alike. His mobility forces defenses to commit their resources to containing him as a runner, often requiring a spy, and preventing them from dropping seven or eight into coverage.
Cincinnati counters with a run defense that ranks 76th nationally, allowing 145 yards per game. The Bearcats could also be without one of its key run stoppers in defensive tackle Josh Hough, who is questionable to return after being carted off the field Oct. 17 at West Virginia.
Still, Cincinnati has shown the ability to limit quarterback mobility. West Virginia’s Michael Hawkins Jr., the Big 12’s top rushing quarterback, managed a season-low 77 rushing yards on 3.0 yards per carry against the Bearcats. Boston College’s Mason McKenzie finished with just 78 rushing yards against the Bearcats, 10 below his season average. Cincinnati held every other quarterback below 40 rushing yards, including Kansas State dual-threat Avery Johnson.
However, containing those quarterbacks on the ground doesn’t necessarily translate to stopping all their production. Hawkins threw for a career-high 464 yards against Cincinnati, allowing West Virginia to eke out a 45-42 win. Although Cincinnati has fared well against mobile quarterbacks this year, the Bearcats must also prevent Dampier from making him pay with his arm. How effectively Cincinnati handles that balancing act will largely dictate this game’s outcome.
Cincinnati’s run blocking vs. Utah’s defensive front
This is the matchup that allowed Cincinnati to defeat Texas Tech by 16 points. The Bearcats’ ground game has been highly effective all season, with the exception of the Arizona game. Cincinnati ranks eighth nationally in rushing yards per game (235) and second in yards per carry (5.99).
The Bearcats rushed for 255 on a typically stout Texas Tech defense, even without one of their primary running backs in Gi’Bran Payne. Cole Tabb led the way with a career-high 173 rushing yards — his third 100-yard performance in a four-game span — while quarterback JC French IV added 46.
That production is heavily driven by a formidable front, headlined by reigning AP All-American guard Evan Tengesdahl and All-Big 12 tackle Joe Cotton. However, another standout on this vaunted offensive line, center Taran Tyo, is listed as questionable for this matchup.
But even if the front five are all healthy, Cincinnati will face more resistance than usual this week. Utah ranks eighth nationally in containing the run, stifling opponents to 88 yards per game on 3.20 yards per carry. The Utes don’t generate much backfield pressure, checking in at 117th in tackles for loss per game. Instead, their strength lies in prventing breakway runs, which are a specialty of Cincinnati’s offense. Utah has only allowed three runs of at least 20 yards and one of at least 30 all season, refraining from allowing a single rush of 40 yards or longer.
Cincinnati’s offense thrives on the foundation of an explosive run game, but Utah has made these plays a rarity for opponents. If the Bearcats’ offensive line can establish lanes for Tabb and Co., that will be the key to another upset. But if the Utes are unforgiving at the line of scrimmage out of the gate, than the visitors will be on track for a 14th-straight win.
Nippert Stadium’s homefield advantage
The importance of homefield advantage is well established, but it has been particularly evident across the Big 12 in this 2026 season. The conference currently features six ranked teams, and not a single one has lost at home. Meanwhile, several unranked Big 12 teams have taken down ranked opponents on their own turf. That was the theme of Week 8 as UCF stunned BYU and Cincinnati took down Texas Tech last Saturday.
Cincinnati will once again have the benefit of its home crowd, and the Bearcats have made the most of that advantage this year. They are 5-0 in the city of Cincinnati this year, including a spotless 4-0 at Nippert Stadium. Although Utah has won four-straight road games, the Utes have navigated several close calls away from Salt Lake City, most notably escaping Colorado 27-24 two weeks ago in Boulder.
Utah enters as a touchdown favorite on the road, but the Bearcats have consistently shown their ability to defend their home turf, defeating both Kansas State and Texas Tech as underdogs. With the backing of Nippert Stadium, Cincinnati has another opportunity to deliver a statement victory, crash the rankings, and end a second perfect season in consecutive weeks.
Cincinnati hosts No. 6 Utah at Nippert Stadium on Saturday at 3:45 p.m. ET on ESPN.
