According to NFL.com’s Nick Shook, Indianapolis Colts newly named QB1 Daniel Jones is the 31st best starting quarterback entering the 2025 campaign:
Rank
31. Daniel Jones
In this ranking, Jones is just below new New York Jets starting quarterback Justin Fields, but one spot ahead of the last spot, which is occupied by New Orleans Saints 2nd-year pro Spencer Rattler.
The 28-year-old veteran Jones ultimately beat out former incumbent, 23-year-old Anthony Richardson, who was the former 4th overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft,
during training camp and preseason with the Colts.
Jones signed a one-year, $14.5 million deal with the Colts earlier this offseason in free agency and so far has made the most of his newfound opportunity in Indianapolis.
Of course, Jones was a former Top 10 first rounder himself, as the former 6th overall pick of the 2019 NFL Draft. He was previously a franchise quarterback hopeful of the New York Giants before joining the Minnesota Vikings last year in a brief stint as their primary backup quarterback after being waived.
The former Duke standout has struggled with inconsistency, turnovers, and injuries, but features dual-threat mobility, and isn’t too far removed from earning a short-lived 4-year, $160 million contract extension with the Giants back in March of 2023 after showing significant flashes as a potential quarterback fixture the prior season.
Under 3rd-year head coach Shane Steichen, who’s been previously well regarded in his work with all types of different quarterbacks, the hope is that Jones can regain that 2022 form. If nothing else, the Colts will be hoping for a lot more consistency, reliability, and turnover free football than they’ve gotten in more recent years at QB1.
