Free agency seems like a dull and distant memory, and the NFL Draft is lightyears away. The offseason must be essentially over, right?
Wrong! But you know this. You know there’s still a lot of work for the Packers to do, and there’s a good chance they’re gaming out moves right now.
Here’s a pretty reliably safe prediction: the Packers will probably make another veteran free agent signing or two at positions of theoretical need just before the draft. We’ve seen Brian Gutekunst do this multiple times
before to shore up positions where he may make a move just to give himself a backstop. Just prior to the 2024 draft, for instance, he signed Andre Dillard, then went on to take Jordan Morgan in the first round, anyway. In 2025, he signed Mecole Hardman and then drafted Matthew Golden. It stands to reason he could do the same here in 2026.
Where would he make the move? It’s anybody’s guess, but cornerback or defensive line seem like pretty good bets. The Packers could use depth at both of those spots, and signing a veteran would be a safeguard against a swing and a miss in the NFL Draft. Sometimes a class just doesn’t break your way, and it’s better to go in with a sure thing than miss out entirely.
In any case, the work continues in Green Bay. The final product won’t be revealed until Week 1.
