On Wednesday, ESPN continued their position rankings series, based on the opinions of current NFL coaches, executives, and scouts. The latest position rankings revealed the top-10 edge rushers for 2026, which means it’s time to talk about how the league views Detroit Lions defensive end Aidan Hutchinson.
Last year, there was some understandable skepticism going into the season given he was coming off a gruesome leg injury. But after putting up an outstanding year—collecting 14.5 sacks (fourth most),
100 PFF pressures (first), 35 quarterback hits (third), and four forced fumbles (t-second)—the league is now all-in on Hutchinson as a top-five pass rusher in this league.
Hutchinson rose from seventh on the edge defender ranking to fifth this year. This is now the highest Hutchinson has ever ranked on this ESPN list, edging out his No. 6 ranking in 2024.
“Skilled with his hands, very good speed-to-power rush to keep offensive tackles off balance and his superpower is his motor is nonstop,” an anonymous NFL defensive coach said.
Every person polled in this ranking had Hutchinson among the top eight on their ballot, and at least one had him as the second-best edge defender in the NFL. The four players who finished ahead of him in the consensus rankings are, in order, Myles Garrett, Micah Parsons, Will Anderson Jr., and Maxx Crosby.
This year, the Lions finally appear to have solid players all along the defensive line. On the interior, they’re getting back Alim McNeill from a 2024 torn ACL, and Tyleik Williams is hoping to make a Year 2 jump. Meanwhile, on the opposite edge of Hutchinson, they added DJ Wonnum, Payton Turner, and drafted Derrick Moore in the second round.
With a better support system, Hutchinson could take his production to an even higher level in 2026, especially since they can use him in so many ways.
“He has a real toolbox,” Lions defensive line coach Kacy Rodgers said this spring. “He can go speed to power. He can go up and under, his counter moves. He rush from the right side, rush from the left side, I don’t know if you notice throughout the year, he rushed from in the middle. His versatility, to me, is really growing. I think he’s probably a really, really, really versatile rusher.”
Previously in this ESPN ranking series, Jahmyr Gibbs ranked as the No.2 running back.
