Steve Belichick has resigned his position of defensive coordinator at the University of North Carolina. His resignation comes after an indefinite medical leave that was announced on August 6, at the beginning of fall camp. WRAL has previously reported that an internal investigation by UNC has been asking about possible drug use by Steve Belichick in its interviews.
The son of head coach Bill Belichick, Steve came to UNC from the University of Washington, where he coached the defense under the direction
of Husky head coach Jedd Fisch for one season. Prior to that stop in Seattle, Steve worked exclusively for his father and the New England Patriots for a decade.
While not unexpected, the departure of Steve Belichick continues a difficult transition to college football for head coach Bill Belichick. Bill Belichick has now seen his three most important initial hires — offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator, and general manager — either fired or resigned. In a recent press conference, Bill noted his love and concern for his child without detailing the reasons for Steve’s absence.
Since the medical leave was announced in early August, UNC has been operating without its defensive coordinator, with adjusted responsibilities among the remaining staff. In that respect, Steve’s resignation will not impact UNC’s preparations to play at Clemson on Saturday.
