The end of May signals the end of the Mountain West Conference sports season. Although the baseball and softball MW champions may still be playing in the NCAA tournaments, the Mountain West has crowned champions for all of its sports at this point in the year. Before fall sports start back up with official practices in August, now is as good a time as any to review each sport by listing the regular season and conference champions.
Last year, we had a three-way tie between the Broncos, Rams, and Aztecs,
who all shared the crown of the “all-sports season champion.” This year, the competition was just as tight as the sports calendar went on, with a number of schools winning multiple championships.
The scoring system isn’t a perfect science, and keep in mind it’s all for fun. Don’t get bent out of shape if the team you don’t like scores higher than the team you do like. But if you have an idea for a different scoring system, feel free to share. We are a blog site doing blog site things, and that involves making up a weighted point system to crown a hypothetical all-sport champion. If it’s not your thing, it’s cool if you move on to the next post.
(All champions are based on the listed info from the Mountain West official site)
Scoring
Not trying to offend any sports, but some should carry more weight than others. The Mountain West sponsors 19 sports. Each sport will be split into three tiers. Football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, and softball will all be worth 3 points. The second level will consist of volleyball and women’s soccer, accounting for two points. The rest will all be worth one point. For sports that have regular seasons and conference tourney champs, each will get full points, and each will count as a separate championship. Same with ties.

Notes
- Five teams did not have a championship in any sport this season. While it’s been the hardest for Hawaii, that will change next year and NIU will have the more challenging time, being eligible in only one sport.
- The repeat champs this year are: men’s & women’s XC (New Mexico), women’s soccer (both BSU regular season and USU tourney), football (Boise State), Swimming & Diving (SDSU), men’s & women’s indoor T&F (CSU, UNM), women’s gymnastics tourney (Utah State), women’s golf (UNLV), women’s tennis regular season (SDSU), and men’s & women’s outdoor T&F (CSU, UNM).
This year was not a close race, as the Aggies ran away with it, doubling the next closest school, San Diego State. Looking at the big picture, nine of the fourteen teams had at least one championship, including both new school, Washington State and Grand Canyon. And seven of them had multiple championships. Most of the point totals were pretty close, with seven teams ranging from 3 to 8 points. However, Utah State dominated with nine total championships, dominating women’s volleyball, men’s basketball, and men’s tennis.
Congrats to the Aggies, who are all the 2026 all-sport champions!
