The rest of the NFC West was on bye, and no one had to lift a finger to put the Seattle Seahawks and Los Angeles Rams into first place. All the 49ers had to do was lose to the Houston Texans 26-15.
I know
some will comment how the Seahawks manhandled the Texans last week, but the Seahawks’ defense isn’t playing on fumes like the 49ers’ defense is. The 49ers couldn’t get to quarterback CJ Stroud, who picked them apart in response. This is the same CJ Stroud who looked ready to be benched last week.
If you can’t get to the quarterback, they are going to put up good numbers. Who would have thought?
Right now, the 49ers, Seahawks, and Rams each have five wins. It’s the loss column that puts the 49ers into third place. Things can even out when the 49ers hit their bye, which happens in Week 14. If there is anything to even out by that point, it is anyone’s guess.
This loss also puts the 49ers down in the NFC pecking order for playoff seeding. Once they were at the top of the NFC, but now they’re in seventh place.
Normally, we would go over what happened to the other teams in the division, but since no other teams played football, here’s a video of Dre Greenlaw stopping the Seahawks on the goalline for no other reason than because it’s awesome:
Onto Week 9
The 49ers get to travel to the torture chamber that is MetLife Stadium and face the New York Giants. The Giants did not have a good day on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles. They did stop a tush push. Well, kinda. Quarterback Jalen Hurts reached forward and got the ball stripped out, but the officials said the play was already dead. So it was a tush push that was successful. Who knows at this point? The night got worse when running back Cam Skatabo was carted off with an ankle injury, not unlike Fred Warner. It’s a safe bet Skatabo won’t be playing in this one.
The Rams will host the New Orleans Saints. I’ve seen the line on this go to above two touchdowns, so maybe wait a week for a team to beat them.
The Seahawks will be traveling to face the Washington Commanders on Sunday Night Football. That should be a fun game. Deebo Samuel should be playing. Washington, you know what to do.
The Cardinal will travel to play the Dallas Cowboys for Monday Night Football. That game could be an instant classic for all of the wrong reasons.
1st: Seattle Seahawks; Next: at Washington Commanders (Sunday Night Football)
2nd: Los Angeles Rams; Next: vs New Orleans Saints
3rd: San Francisco 49ers; Next: at New York Giants
4th: Arizona Cardinals; Next: at Dallas Cowboys (Monday Night Football)
