Saturday will be a big game for Kentucky Football. The Wildcats have started the season 4-1 under first-year head coach Will Stein, and Lane Kiffin and LSU will be coming to Lexington for a highly anticipated SEC matchup.
Kiffin is in his first season as LSU’s head coach, while Stein is in his first season leading Kentucky. With both programs entering a new era, Saturday’s matchup will have plenty of storylines surrounding it.
However, the game will also feature the return of a familiar piece of Kentucky
football history.
Kentucky will bring back the Power K logo, which Stein has been teasing throughout the season. Last week, the Wildcats appeared to begin bringing the logo back to life when it was used to promote the upcoming LSU-Kentucky matchup in Lexington.
Kentucky fans also noticed that the Power K was being painted at midfield ahead of Saturday’s game, confirming that the iconic logo will return to the field.
Stein discussed the Power K on David Pollack’s podcast, “See Ball Get Ball,”on Monday, explaining what the logo means to him, the fanbase, and the state of Kentucky.
“Yeah. It’s going to be out there. Excited about that and what it means to our entire fanbase and to this state. I think the word Power…”
Stein then explained that the logo represents the history of Kentucky Football, including the highs and lows the program has experienced over the years.
“I think it’s just history. And when you think about the history of Kentucky Football, there’s been ups. There’s been downs. There’s been a lot of in-between. And so I think it brings back just some really good memories of those days.”
For Stein, however, the Power K carries an even more personal meaning.
“For me, personally, that’s what my dad wore. So that, I think, is really cool for me to embody his team spirit and what this means to the people who have played with this uniform on.”
Stein also made it clear that he hopes the Power K will be more than just a one-game throwback.
“It’ll be cool. We’re excited about it and excited to have this for hopefully years to come in the rotation.”
The Power K will officially return to the field Saturday when Kentucky hosts LSU in Lexington.
After starting the season 4-1 and coming off a thrilling 35-34 overtime victory over South Carolina, Kentucky will have an opportunity to add another statement win to Stein’s first season, and with the Power K back at midfield, it should be a special atmosphere inside Kroger Field.
