The exciting win in Week 2 versus the Tampa Bay Buccaneers did not come without some concerns for the Cleveland Browns. The run game continues to struggle two weeks in, and the defense was bailed out by quite a few overthrows by QB Baker Mayfield.
That doesn’t mean there isn’t a lot to celebrate, including the way-too-early look at the AFC playoff picture after the first two games of the season. QB Deshaun Watson had one of his best games, WR Denzel Boston joined history, and the defense was able
to get pressure when they needed it.
The revamped offensive line is one of the pieces causing issues in the rushing attack, but is much better at protecting Watson in the passing game:
The issue in run blocking, as well as for the running back behind it, is the nuanced dance that requires everyone to be on beat, in rhythm, and with the right timing. One step too quick and someone’s toes are getting stepped on.
There is no guarantee that time will heal all the issues for Cleveland’s offensive line. The good news is that the passing blocking, which is less of a dance and more of a skill issue, has been good. Now, the line needs to stay healthy and get their dance in lockstep so RB Quinshon Judkins, Raheim Sanders, and Jaleel McLaughlin can waltz their way into the defensive secondary and end zone.
Do you expect/assume that the Browns line will get much better in run blocking, or concerned that they don’t have the makeup to do so?
