A year of incredible shots, heroic performances and big wins paid off for Keaton Wagler.
The guard earned the title of Kansas City Sportsman of the Year from the Kansas City Sports Commission and Foundation. The winners of the awards were announced Wednesday, and a ceremony will be held in late August.
Past winners of the award include Travis Kelce, Patrick Mahomes, Chris Jones,
and the Kansas men’s basketball team. Wagler is the first individual college athlete to win the award since 2018.
Wagler was a force for Illinois this year. He averaged 17.9 points per game, 5.1 rebounds per game and 4.2 assists per game. Wagler’s play earned him Big Ten Freshman of the Year, First-Team All-Big Ten and Second-Team All-American honors.
