Last season, the New Jersey Devils announced 26 theme and cultural nights out of their 41 home games at the Prudential Center. With over 63% of all home games devoted in some way or another to a theme, giveaway, or cultural celebration, it was more likely than not that Devils fans would attend a home game on a “special night.” While that number was impressive, the number of giveaway nights last season was a much lower percentage of that. Only seven nights featured any giveaways, and some of them were
of the small variety, such as the Ring of Honor pin or the Hockey Fights Cancer placard.
So, only a few games last season had real substantial giveaways. They were:
- Nov. 25, 2025: camo baseball hat (Military Appreciation)
- Jan. 3, 2026: NJ Devil lunch box (Mascot Madness)
- Feb. 25, 2026: summer Jack in the Box (Devils Down the Shore)
- Mar. 8, 2026: Brett Pesce bobblehead (Youth Hockey Weekend)
- Apr. 12, 2026: Jersey shirsey (Jersey Appreciation Night/Jersey Jersey Retirement)
For most of the 18 cultural celebrations that were not connected to a giveaway or events on the concourse, the Devils did not really do anything. It was really just a day on the calendar where Devils ticket sales representatives got people or groups to buy tickets more readily than they usually would. Perhaps on some of those nights, which maybe used to feature special warmup jerseys (thanks Gary), fans felt a little underwhelmed with the lack of much effort on the Devils’ part to make whichever cultural night it was actually feel like a celebratory night instead of a regular Tuesday evening matchup against the Buffalo Sabres.
So how many nights did the Devils keep for 2026-27? They get an extra home game, bringing the schedule up to 42 games, so did they keep it around the 25 mark? Nope, not even close.
Starting with the giveaways, the Devils only have eight nights where they give anything away. I have bolded the dates for the six I consider substantial They are:
- Oct. 1, 2026: Home Opener: light-up bam bam (all attendees)
- Nov. 5, 2026: Military Appreciation: camo baseball hat (9,000)
- Nov. 23, 2026: Thanksgiving Week Kickoff: Devils Butter Bench (9,000)
- Jan. 9, 2027: Hockey Fights Cancer: Hockey Fights Cancer placard (all attendees)
- Feb. 20, 2027: Youth Hockey Day: Arseny Gritsyuk figurine bag tag (9,000)
- Mar. 5, 2027: Mascot Madness: NJ Devil night light (9,000)
- Apr. 10, 2027: Fan Appreciation Night: Luke Hughes bobblehead (9,000)
- TBD: Ring of Honor Night: Ring of Honor pin (all attendees)
The real issue with the schedule comes with the vast reduction in cultural celebrations. This is all that’s left for non-giveaway nights. We only have five with dates right now, with a few to be announced.
- Oct. 22, 2026: Devils K-Pop Night (really a promotion for the October 23 performance by Taemin at the Prudential Center)
- Nov. 18, 2026: Newark Celebration
- Jan. 19, 2027: Pride Night
- Feb. 23, 2027: Black History Night
- Mar. 29, 2027: Hispanic Heritage Night
- TBD: Jewish Community Night
- TBD: Women in Sports Night
- TBD: Autism Awareness Night (three games)
- TBD: “More group nights?” (In accordance with how many tickets a group can muster up with the Devils?)
And no, I’m not just taking a cynical dig at the Devils there with the “how many tickets” bit. Per the link, 10 tickets will get you your group name on the scoreboard and a group gift for any kids along with lower ticket prices and your own “exclusive fan experiences.” That may be something like a photo on the ice or a zamboni ride. But if you get 50 tickets, you get one autographed puck in addition! And if you get 100 tickets, your group leader gets a gift and they get to go to Group Leader Appreciation Night. And for 300 tickets, you get one customized jersey! I cannot say I find the breakdown there extremely impressive, but this would explain to some extent why some days are not even listed yet. They may happen. But someone needs to organize a group and pay the Devils to be recognized.
To the Devils’ slight credit, they do note that under the section for the to be decided nights above that “tickets purchased for these group nights through special links will include unique t-shirts and other fan experiences.” So, that’s nice: there will technically be partial giveaways on some cultural nights. But I ask: why not all of the cultural nights? Why just a few? And why do all of these nights have to have their partial giveaways tied entirely to special group links? There’s just something a bit ironic to me about running Autism Awareness Night and only giving t-shirts to the people who already bought tickets through the special link so they could specifically go to that game.
So we’ve gone from 18 cultural celebrations in 2025-26 to five with dates and three to be decided, with the promise of more if you organize a group to buy a bunch of tickets together. Unlike last season, there’s not even a basic effort by the Devils Public Relations to promise to acknowledge cultural groups. Now, did they do enough on those cultural dates last year? Probably not. But the planning has been dialed back substantially and it remains to be seen whether the few nights that have remained will receive a higher level of effort on the Devils’ part than they had last season.
In total, we’re going from 26 theme and cultural nights to at least 14 (or 16 if you count the Autism Awareness/sensory-friendly games as three separate nights). Keeping just around 54% of the promised theme nights from last season, the Devils had better do a bang-up job when those scheduled nights roll around and not just throw up some names on the jumbotron.
